Biografi Baron Karl Von Drais - Penemu Sepeda

Baron Karls Drais von Sauerbronn atau Karl Drais lahir pada tanggal 29 April 1785 di Karlsruhe, Jerman, dia adalah seorang penemu Jerman dan menemukan Laufmaschine juga kemudian disebut sepeda beroda tiga, atau draisienne. Ini kemudian dimasukkan sebagai prinsip roda dua yang kemudian menjadi dasar untuk sepeda dan sepeda motor dan merupakan awal dari transportasi pribadi mekanik. Drais juga menemukan mesin ketik awal dengan keyboard pada tahun 1821. Dari 1803-1805, Drais belajar arsitektur, pertanian dan fisika di University of Heidelberg.

Ia bergabung sebagai pejabat kehutanan, bekerja sebagai guru di lembaga kehutanan pribadi milik pamannya, dan pada tahun 1810 menerima gelar kepala rimbawan, tetapi posisinya belum ditentukan. Oleh Von Drais, Hobby Horse dimodifikasi hingga akhirnya mempunyai mekanisme kemudi pada bagian roda depan. bentuknya sepeda beroda tiga, bentuk awal dari sepeda, namun tanpa pedal. Perjalanannya yang pertama dilaporkan, dari Mannheim ke Schwetzinger Relaishaus berlangsung pada tanggal 12 Juni 1817. Pada tahun yang sama, dia melakukan perjalanan kedua, dari Gernsbach ke Baden, dan lain-lain. Dengan mengambil tenaga gerak dari kedua kaki, Von Drais mampu meluncur lebih cepat saat berkeliling. Dia sendiri menyebut kendaraan ini dengan nama Draisienne. Beritanya sendiri dimuat di koran lokal Jerman pada 1817. Pada 1839, Kirkpatrick Macmillan menambahkan batang penggerak yang menghubungkan antara roda belakang dan ban depan Draisienne.

Sepeda Draisienne ini tak bertahan lama, karena setelah itu, mulai muncul jenis-jenis sepeda baru yang lebih effisien bahkan beberapa di antaranya ada yang sudah menggunakan pedal, walaupun pedal tersebut masih belum sempurna seperti sepeda jaman sekarang). Walau begitu, sepeda buatan Baron von Drais ini tetap harus diacungi jempol, karena sudah mampu menjadi tonggak munculnya sepeda-sepeda modern di dunia.

Pada tanggal 12 Januari 1818, Drais dianugerahi sebuah penghormatan dengan gelar duke sebagai imbalan atas penemuannya. Baden tidak memiliki hak paten atas penemuannya pada waktu itu. Grand Duke Karl Drais kemudian juga ditunjuk sebagai Profesor Mekanika. Ini hanyalah sebuah gelar kehormatan, tidak berhubungan dengan universitas atau lembaga lain. Drais pensiun dari layanan sipil dan terus menerima gaji sebagai atas penemuannya.

Bencana mendekati Drais ketika sebuah pembunuhan dan pemenggalan terjadi atas Ludwig Sand, pada tahun 1820. Ayah Drais sebagai hakim tertinggi Baden, menolak meminta maaf, dan anaknya kemudian di kepung oleh mahasiswa mahasiswa di jerman. Drais kemudian meninggal di kota kelahirannya, Karlsruhe pada tanggal 10 Desember 1851, tanpa uang sepeser pun setelah Prusia melakukan revolusi di Baden dan menyita uang pensiun drais sepenuhnya untuk membayar biaya revolusi.
